Kevin Anderson

 

Internationally acclaimed tenor Kevin Anderson quickly established himself as one of the most exciting singing-actors today. He came to world-wide attention with the San Francisco Opera's historic production and telecast of  L'Africaine with Placido Domingo and Shirley Verrett. His career highlights include Lyric Opera of Chicago where he sang Janek in a new production of vec Makropulos with Catherine Malfitano (broadcast over National Public Radio) and Hugo Weissgall's Six Characters in Search of an Author , opening the 1995 season of Santa Fe Opera as Tasillo in their highly successful production of Kalman's Countess Maritza, the Teatro Arriaga in Bilbao as Fenton in Falstaff, Vlaamse Opera (Antwerp) as Fenton, the Steersman in Fliegende Hollander, La Rondine and Paris in the controversial production of King Priam and  as Sam Kaplan in Kurt Weill's Street Scene which he has sung for the New York City Opera, the English National Opera for two seasons in the David Poutney production (telecast for the BBC) and at Theater des Westens in the production by Francesca Zambello. With Opera Theater of St. Louis he created the title role of Candide in the world premiere staging of the composer's revised opera house version.

 Elsewhere he has sung: Rodolfo in La Boheme and Rinuccio in Gianni Schicchi with Cleveland Opera; Tonio in La Fille du Regiment with Michigan Opera Theater; Pacific Opera Victoria in the title role in Romeo et Juliette and Nemorino in L'elisir d'amore; Capetown Opera and Utah Opera as Paris in La Belle Helene ; New York City Opera as the poet in L'Heure Espagnole, Sam Kaplan in Street Scene and Henrik in A Little Night Music; Compañia Nacional de Opera in Costa Rica and Taipei Symphony  as Alfredo in La Traviata ; Edmonton Opera as Nanki-Poo in Mikado; Scottish Opera as Ferrando in Cosi fan tutte; New Orleans Opera as Fenton in Falstaff .For the 1996-97 season Mr. Anderson  toured with Oscar winning actress Faye Dunaway in Terrence McNally's Master Class and returned to the Naples Philharmonic for a New Year's Eve Gala and concerts with Cincinnati Symphony, Philadelphia Orchestra and Indianapolis Orchestra. 

Recent engagements included Lyric Opera of Chicago for their production of Marvin David Levy's revised Mourning Becomes Electra, Canadian Opera Company in the world premiere of The Golden Ass and Santa Fe Opera for Countess Maritza as well as concerts in Europe and with the Naples Philharmonic and Cincinnati Symphony and at the Ravinia Festival with the Chicago Symphony . Tamino in Die Zauberflöte with Toledo Opera and Ralph in HMS Pinafore with Cleveland Opera as well as debuting with Chautauqua Opera in Street Scene as well as a concert with Baltimore Symphony. Next season he returns to Lyric Opera of Chicago for Jenufa , sings Edgardo in Lucia di Lammermoor for both Gold Coast Opera and the opening of the Antigua Festival inGuatemala and H.M.S. Pinafore with Knoxville Opera

A popular concert artist, Mr. Anderson's symphony engagements have included  the Colorado Springs Symphony in the title role in La Damnation de Faust, Orchestra of St. Luke's in performances of La Pomme d'Api and with the San Francisco Symphony in the Mozart C minor Mass and the Bach B minor Mass, Orquesta Nacional de Costa Rica in the Verdi Requiem and Orquesta Sinfonica del Estado de Mexico for the Beethoven Ninth Symphony .  Mr. Anderson has sung with Cincinnati Symphony, Indianapolis Symphony, Naples Philharmonic and most recently with Chicago Symphony Orchestra at the Ravinia Festival. He was featured soloist in a  Bernstein concert with Leonard Slatkin and the Cleveland Orchestra,  toured the Far East singing concerts in Taipei, Hong Kong, Singapore, Bangkok and Djakarta and sang Gaylord Ravenal in concert performances of Showboat at the Edinburgh Festival under John McGlinn.

 Mr. Anderson has enjoyed a long and fruitful association with Maestro Erich Kunzel in concerts of Opera, Operetta and Broadway with Cincinnati Symphony and POPs, Naples Philharmonic,and the symphonies of Indianapolis , Toronto , Baltimore , Detroit , Taipei and Chicago Symphony Orchestra at the Ravinia Festival.  He begins work in February on a CD of Walz music with Kunzel and the Cincinnati POPs along with his wife, soprano Jami Rogers

Mr. Anderson's television appearances, recordings and videos include: Beethoven's Ninth Symphony with Mo. Enrique Batiz and the Orquesta Sinfonica de el Estado de Mexico for EMI/Mexico; Hugo Weisgall's Six Characters in Search of an Opera with Elizabeth Futral and the Lyric Opera of Chicago on Nonesuch Records; Alvar in L'Africaine with Placido Domingo on video and laser disc from Pioneer; I'm a stranger here myself: Kurt Weill in America a Barrie Gavin film for BBC/Hessischer Rundfunk; the ENO production of Street Scene on the BBC ; A Little Night Music on PBS/Great Performances; Sondheim: A Celebration at Carnegie Hall available on compact disc as well as video and laser from BMG . Newly released is Leonard Bernstein Mass at Vatican City (2000) on DVD and CD.

Born in Moline, Illinois, Kevin first became interested in singing as a member of the Moline Boys Choir. Moving to Denver in High School, he continued his vocal studies and made his professional debut at 19 with Central City Opera. He is a graduate of the University of Wyoming and was a Santa Fe Opera apprentice and a member of the San Francisco Opera Merola and Adler Fellow programs, a Metropolitan Opera Competition finalist and a grantee of the Sullivan Foundation.  He makes his homes in Knoxville Tennessee with his wife, soprano Jami Rogers, their son Beckett along with 2 dogs and 2 cats.
